Marianela Barrios Aquino was a visiting researcher from the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon in the spring and summer of 2013. After finishing her degree in Sociology at the University of Salamanca in Spain, Marianela became interested in migration and its effects on the (re)configuration of migrants’ identities. Currently, Marianela is working on her PhD thesis "The Immigrant: Identity as a Power Resource." During her stay at ISIM, Marianela was able to examine and compare the situation of migration studies and of immigration policies in the United States. Upon her return to Europe, Marianela planned to conduct fieldwork in Lisbon, London and Berlin, continuing to research the effects of migration on migrants.
