REINTEGRATION: A CHALLENGE FOR BUILDING PEACE AND RESTORING NATIONAL INTEGRITY

Patricia Weiss Fagen was awarded a Jennings Randolph Senior Fellowship at the U.S. Institute of Peace. Her research project, “A Challenge for Building Peace and Restoring National Integrity”, started with the premise that war-to-peace transition programs afford too low a priority to the reintegration of civilians displaced by conflict. As successful post conflict reintegration is an important bellwether for lasting peace, her research links the reintegration of returning refugees and internally displaced to the broader peace building process. The project examines the priorities, sequence, and timing of needed actions, and questions the definition of “integration” in conflict or post-conflict settings. As a product of her work, she has written in depth case studies on Colombia and Liberia, and brief reviews of Afghanistan, Bosnia, Burundi and Iraq.
