Results of ISIM roundtables and research into immigration policy reform have been compiled on the ISIM website. The project was supported by the MacArthur Foundation and set out to classify major areas of US immigration policy, and to and identify problems and promote policy solutions regarding those areas.

ISIM hosted a roundtable under Chatham House Rules to discuss US detention and removal policies, and their legal and humanitarian challenges. ISIM then released a report on the findings of the roundtable in conjunction with President Obama's recent executive orders pertaining to detention and removal.

ISIM is co-hosting with the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies an event featuring Killian Kleinschmidt. Mr. Kleinschmidt is the former UNHCR Camp Manager of Zaatari Camp, a refugee camp in Jordan that was established to host Syrian refugees. The talk is Wednesday, November 19th at 12pm in ICC 241.

ISIM organized a meeting in October that focused on three main issues: U.S. asylum policies, U.S. refugee resettlement policies, and alternative policies to promote protection of those facing life threatening situations. ISIM has now published a report detailing the conversation and solutions suggested during the roundtable.

ISIM's Susan F. Martin, Sanjula Weerasinghe and Abbie Taylor have spent 2014 editing "Humanitarian Crises and Migration: Causes, Consequences and Responses" (Routledge, 2014). The chapter 'Health Crisis and Migration' is available through Georgetown's website and provides recommendations for handling infectious diseases.

ISIM Director Dr. Susan Martin and Lisa Singh, Associate Professor of Computer Science, were awarded a grant from the McCourt School's Massive Data Institute to use data to better understand population displacement.

ISIM was one of 250 NGOs to participate in UNHCR’s 2014 Annual Consultations with NGOs. ISIM also co-hosted with UNHCR an event on "Alternatives Models for International Protection of Forced Migrants" with UNHCR.

'Gender, Conscription and Protection, and the War in Syria', written by Rochelle Davis, Abbie Taylor and Emma Murphy, examines the difficulties faced by men fleeing the fighting in Syria. The article, featured in Forced Migration Review 47, is part of ongoing research on the issue of gender, war and displacement from Syria.

ISIM hosted a roundtable in March 2014 exploring the future of low-wage migrant works, specifically those receiving H-2 visas for agriculture and other low-skilled jobs. The discussion focused on humane treatment of the workers, issues for employers, and the growth of the program since the 1990s.

ISIM continued its series of expert roundtables in March, with support from the MacArthur Foundation. The most recent roundtable was a discussion of migration and H1-B visas, which are given to high-skilled workers, often in STEM fields. The participants debated whether the program should be expanded or downsized.

ISIM non-resident senior fellow Sanjula Weerasinghe published a report following a meeting on planned relocation in Senremo, Italy. The meeting comprised of experts on migration and was organized by ISIM, the Brookings Institution-LSE project on Internal Displacement, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
