While there’s growing recognition that displacement lasts far too long – with high costs for refugees and internally displaced persons – too little attention is paid to potential solutions for protracted displacement. This special issue of the Journal of Migration and Human Security (JMHS) takes a step in addressing this gap in research with ten contributions from a varied set of researchers, including several people with lived displacement experience. Co-edited by Don Kerwin, editor of JMHS and Elizabeth Ferris of Georgetown’s Institute for the Study of International Migration, the special issue provides an overview by the co-editors of the search for solutions in protracted situations by the co-editor, followed by case studies on a number of countries, Azerbaijani IDPs to the Rohingya in Bangladesh to Syrian refugees and displaced groups in northern Mexico.
